Hawthorn’s Century of Service

The name “Hawthorn” may be relatively new, but the company’s banks have been serving communities throughout Missouri for over 100 years, providing not only personal and business banking services, but peace of mind. The four core banks that consolidated to form what is today Hawthorn Bank have throughout history shared the mission of promoting economic growth and stability within the community:

  • Exchange National Bank – The oldest business in Missouri’s capital city, Jefferson City Savings Association (as it was originally known) opened for business in 1865. Progressive for its time, it was the first bank in Jefferson City to install an adding machine. Exchange National Bancshares, Inc. became the holding company for the four banking entities.
  • Citizens Union State Bank & Trust – Established as Union State Bank in 1932 in Clinton, Missouri, the bank quickly became known as the area’s “Hometown Friend.” Its name was synonymous with fast, friendly service and technical innovation. Citizens Union State Bank & Trust was purchased by Exchange National Bancshares, Inc. in 2000.
  • Osage Valley Bank – Founded in 1891, the bank has maintained a presence at the intersection of Main and Van Buren in Warsaw, Missouri since it opened its doors. Although the original structure was consumed by fire in 1917, a new bank building was constructed on the same site in 1921. Osage Valley Bank was purchased by Exchange National Bancshares, Inc. in 2000.
  • Bank 10 – Originally known as Bank of Drexel, the family-owned community bank began operations in Drexel, Missouri in 1910. It was owned by the Balentine family for many decades. Bank 10 was purchased by Exchange National Bancshares, Inc. in 2005

In December 2006, Exchange National Bancshares Inc. began the monumental task of consolidating its four banking entities under a single charter. “We were doing four of everything,” commented James Smith, chairman and CEO, “four outside audits, four inside audits, four exams. We decided the only way to get the right economies of scale and get everybody on the same page was to put all the banks under one charter.” It took fifteen committees and ten months of analysis to identify the best practices and products for the consolidated bank. In October 2007, the process was completed, and all 26 banking locations became part of Hawthorn Bancshares Inc.

The new name, Hawthorn Bank, reflects the rich heritage and culture of the state of Missouri and the communities the organization serves. Its name may have changed, but the bank still provides the same superior service from the same friendly people. And, as it has done for over a century, Hawthorn continues to support the youth groups, civic clubs, school functions, and local charities of its communities. Today, with its headquarters in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Hawthorn has banking locations in Jefferson City, Springfield, Branson, Independence, Raymore, Columbia, Clinton, Windsor, Collins, Osceola, Warsaw, Belton, Drexel, Harrisonville, California, and St. Robert.

With roots dating back to 1865, Hawthorn Bank has the history and strength you need to give you peace of mind. And, as a leader in its communities, Hawthorn Bank intends to be your personal banker for life.
